With all of the top modern-day music acts producing music videos looking at the best sellers of 2017 gives a clear insight to how the general public appreciates the modern-day music acts. The most popular performer of 2017 was Ed Sheeran. As well as his album “Divide” being the best-selling album of the year, his second album X was the eleventh most popular in the UK charts. Sheeran has so far released three albums and has experienced great success already selling more than 26 million albums world-wide.

In his career he has embraced product placement. In the 2014 music video for “Sing” he wears beats earphones during the recording. Sheeran is so popular that he has managed to make a guest appearance on the hit television series “Game of Thrones”.

The second most popular album was the debut album “Human” by Rag’n’Bone Man. The album included the hit single of the same name and at the 2017 Brit Awards he won the British Breakthrough Act and also received the Critics’ Choice Award.

Sam Smith also had a successful year with his second album “The Thrill of It All”. Despite it only being released as late as November only two albums managed to sell more copies during the entire year. He also released a single, “Palace”, to help advertise Apple I Phones AirPods. The song was so successful that it reached number 1 in January 2018, in the Top TVs Commercial Chart. Pinks 7th Album “Beautiful Trauma” also sold well in the United Kingdom. She has sold over 40 million records in her career so far and has won three Grammy awards. Her 2017 album was the 4th most popular in the country and included the singles “Whatever You Want” and “What About Us”.

Drake in his Moncler Mayer

Drakes Album “More Life” was also a high selling record finishing in the top ten in the country. Drake has always had a close relationship with Product Placement. In the video for the 2016 release “Hot Line Bling” he wore a shiny cherry-red Moncler Mayer down Puffer Jacket. Within 24 hours the company had sold double the amounts of Jackets that it had done on any other day.

Sometimes the stars will promote a brand without knowing it. The retailers will benefit because they have not paid a penny to have their produce promoted. Stone Island clothes are very popular and are worn by Drake as well as Liam Gallagher, Odell Beckham and Kanye West. The company does not ask or pay the stars for their endorsement but they do benefit from the free exposure that their cloths receive in the media.

Liam Gallagher chose 2017 to release his debut single album “As You Were” also featured in the top 10 of best-selling albums. In his time with Oasis the group shied away from Product Placement, and he would be horrified to find that, along with Drake and company, he had unwittingly helped to promote a designer fashion label.
