September 5, 2019By

Have you ever watched the adverts on television and found yourself singing or whistling a song that you might have never even heard of? If the answer is yes, then you are among millions of people all over the world who are doing exactly the same. By songs we are not referring to Jingles, rather fully formed songs that have proper structure and could easily be played on the radio. Some songs are little known before they are aired, and some are classics from the past. And the advertising geniuses know exactly what pushes our buttons, here are some of the most memorable.

Rhapsody in Blue – United Airlines

The concept of fitting the whole orchestra on a plane to show how spacious the aircraft is was brilliant. Immediately the consumer could imagine that if a concert orchestra with all their instruments could physically fit inside the cabin then there would be plenty of room for them too. The choice of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue was inspired, as the gentle melodies ooze calm and peace far from a crammed airliner.

Bohemian Like You – Vodafone

This Vodafone advert made the band the Dandy Warhols, and took them from obscurity to complete commercial success. The ad itself was rather obscure with a bunch of people running around with nothing to do with the product. However, the song was a smash hit, and as one of the band members famously said Vodafone saved Rock n’ Roll.

Revolution – Nike

The Nike advertisement featuring the classic Beatles track Revolution, spared absolutely nothing in terms of budget. There were no indie bands involved in this mega ad, just one of the most famous groups in the world. Which meant that the ad had immediate impact and was instantly a big success. If you are a global company, you can afford to pair your product with one of the most famous songs of all time, and it elevated Nike footwear into cult status among young people all over the world, leaving their competitors chasing after them in their wake.

Your Song – John Lewis

John Lewis department store is famous for their Christmas ads, and every year they seem to be getting more lavish and almost as popular as the Christmas panto. In 2010, the haunting and sad Ellie Goulding’s version of Your Song by Elton John has viewers reaching for their tissue boxes. The ad depicted real people trying to clumsily wrap presents they had bought for their loved ones. And together with the fantastic song makes the ad one of the most memorable that John Lewis have ever released. It also launched the career of Ellie Goulding who was little known up to then. In fact, a year after the release of the ad, Ellie Goulding was invited to sing at the wedding reception of Prince William. These are just some of the great songs that have been featured in advertisements over the years, and everybody has their own particular favorite. And the advertising moguls obviously have done their jobs well as we still remember the product as well as the song.
